Decorating the Bathroom

Although the colour and style of a bathroom suite are personal matters, there are a few things you should consider:

Think twice before selecting exotic colours or exaggerated shapes as you could tire of them in a very short time.

Colours often come and go in fashion and availability, and the same colour may not be available from different manufacturers.

When selecting decorating colours, take into consideration the natural light of the room—you would not want the room to be too dark or cold. For example, if you choose white fixtures, it does not imply that your bathroom will have a cold feeling; you can introduce an imaginative bold colour scheme with paint, tiles, wallpaper and fabric to make your bathroom distinctive. You can also use a wallpaper to decorate the room; however, vinyl or wipe clean wallpapers cope well with the ever present condensation.

Your bathroom does not have to be basic and clinical; here are a few ideas to add more colour:

By adding an interesting piece of wood or cane furniture, a small upholstered chair, or a wooden bath side panel, you can add a natural effect.

You can integrate the design of the bathroom by using an all over pattern or the same colour for walls, ceiling, flooring and curtaining.

You can incorporate curtains and wallpaper within the colour scheme of your fittings.

Wall hangings and pictures can be used to add character to your bathroom. An indoor plant on shelves is also a good idea as many of them thrive in a steamy atmosphere. With a bit of ingenuity and style, you can make the bathroom an extension of your personality.

Mirrors or mirror tiles make a small bathroom look bigger by giving an illusion of space. Make sure that you use mirrors specifically sold for use in bathrooms, as other mirrors may quickly become damaged by the inevitable condensation.

You can also give the bathroom an illusion of height through various ways.

Vertical lines lend the illusion of height to a room by drawing the eye upwards. Tiles that extend up to the ceiling can make a small bathroom feel larger. You can also achieve the same effect by painting a vertical stripe or using a similar wallpaper pattern.

Another technique for drawing the eye upwards is by lining the edge, or ‘crown’ of the ceiling with a border; perhaps a cornice around the top of the walls.
