Eight Tips for Buying a Spa Bathtub.

A whirlpool bath isn't just the ultimate in bathing luxury-it's also a purchase that can add value to your home. Many people buy whirlpool baths to transform their bathrooms into relaxing spa retreats and make their homes more appealing to buyers. However, not all whirlpool tubs are created equally. Here are a few things to consider when making the decision to buy a whirlpool tub.

Consider how you plan to use it. There are many different types of whirlpool tubs-from one person tubs to those that accommodate three or more people, as well as endless pools that allow you to swim in place and deep spa bathtubs that are designed for gentle water exercise. The type of tub you choose should depend on how you plan to use it.

Plan where you will install it. Whirlpool tubs take up a lot of room. Some are designed to fit into your existing tub alcove; these are approximately 1.5 metre long. Some are made to drop into the floor or an elevated platform, while others can fit in a corner to make the most of your bathroom space. Whatever type you choose, make sure you measure your available space and choose a tub that will fit.

Be sure your water heater can handle it. Not all water heaters can heat enough water at once to fill a whirlpool tub. These tubs can vary greatly in size, holding between 95 and 560 litres of water on average. Be sure your water heater is up to the job before buying a whirlpool tub.

Try before you buy. Test out the comfort of a variety of different tubs on the showroom floor before you buy them. Some stores will let you get into the tub while it's filled, so bring your bathing suit. Bring a friend if you plan on sharing the tub to see how well it accommodates two people. Bear in mind that it will be more expensive to heat a two-person whirlpool tub.

Be sure your floor can handle it. Will the tub be installed in a first-floor or second-floor bathroom? Some tubs can be extremely heavy, especially those made from enameled cast iron and large bathtubs of any material when completely filled with water. However, there are tubs made from lightweight plastics and molded acrylics. Consider the amount of weight your floor can support before buying a tub.

Consider the type of tub. Air-jet tubs push air through numerous small holes to produce a bubbling sensation all over the tub. Whirlpool tubs force air and water through a number of large jets strategically positioned for strong water massage. Some tubs allow you to adjust the jets to change the pressure or direction of water flow.

Choose a low-maintenance tub. Plastic and acrylic tubs resist stains better than most other materials. But it's not just the outer surface you'll have to worry about. Hot tubs can be ideal breeding grounds for bacteria, so you'll need to get a tub that's relatively easy to clean internally as often as needed. Some air-jet tubs have automatic cleaning features that automatically turn on after each use. In addition, make sure the tub you choose allows easy and convenient access to the internal space for cleaning and repair.

Be safety-conscious. Accidents happen. Some whirlpool tubs come with safety features such as grab bars for added stability, steps or doors for easy entry, and non-slip floors. Others will cut the power to the motor if the water level gets too low; this will prevent your motor from overheating. Others will shut off automatically in case of submersion. Be sure to talk to a knowledgeable salesperson about appropriate safety features before you buy.

Whirlpool tubs can transform any bathroom into a luxurious retreat. These tubs can be highly romantic and highly relaxing at the same time. Consider your budget, available space, water heater capacity, and the weight your floor can support before buying a tub. In addition, think about how you plan to use the tub, how many people will be using it regularly, and whether you'll need easy-access or safety features. With a little planning, you should be able to find the perfect whirlpool tub.
