Think again. The bathroom is the most difficult place for a redesign project, because it involves the work of so many professionals-plumbers, electricians, tilers, and carpenters, just to name a few. But there are many things you can do yourself in the bathroom. Whether you're looking for an easy way to change your bathroom's look or you want to save money on contractors by doing some projects yourself, here are a few redesign projects anyone can do.
Painting. Painting is easy to do on your own, and it can make a big difference in the look of your bathroom. You have endless options for colours to choose, and the one that's right for you depends on several factors-including the size and style of your room, the colours you like, and whether you're redesigning for yourself or to make the home more appealing to buyers. If you're planning to sell the home, be sure to choose a more neutral colour that will appeal to a wider number of people.
Replacing your old shower curtain with a sliding glass door. You don't need a pro to install a sliding glass door in your shower.
Many shower doors come in kits that include instructions, and don't require professional installation. A sliding glass door can make your bathroom look more spacious. You can choose clear or frosted glass; clear glass adds more space and can look more stylish, but it also needs to be cleaned more often.
Installing shelves. Sometimes all you need is a bit more storage. If you usually have personal products scattered around your sink, it's not difficult to put up some shelves near the sink, buy some attractive containers, and keep your personal items stored and organized. It will make your bathroom look less cluttered, and your sink area more inviting. If you have limited storage space, adding shelving can give you room to store towels, soaps and shampoos, extra toilet paper, and other items as well.
Demolishing your old bathroom. If you're hiring contractors to help with a redesign project, chances are you're paying them by the hour. That can be costly, but you can save money by taking on some of the more simple projects yourself. One easy, fun project to do is demolition. If you're planning to get rid of a wall, take out your sink, or remove old tiles on the floor, you can do these things yourself and save money. Be sure to wear safety goggles and heavy gloves when performing this type of task, as sharp pieces of ceramic and flying bits of wood can be a safety hazard.
A good cleaning. Maybe all your bathroom needs is a good scrubbing, or maybe you want to save money by doing the clean-up yourself after the contractors are done with the more difficult projects. Whatever the reason, you can make your bathroom look brighter and cleaner by scrubbing away mold that's accumulated between tiles in your shower, mopping and scrubbing the floor, or using a bleach solution on grimy-looking surfaces.
Change your medicine cabinet. Changing your medicine cabinet can change the look of your bathroom. For many flush-mounted medicine cabinets, you won't need any more expertise or tools than it would take to hang a picture. You'll need a drill and screws, a studfinder, and some drywall anchors to keep the cabinet secure. Make sure to "dry fit" or hold up your cabinet to the wall to find the best place to hang it before beginning the task. While you can do this task yourself, it helps to have an extra pair of hands. And make sure to use safety goggles when using any electric power tools.
A bathroom redesign project can be a big task. But you don't need professional help on everything. A few redesign projects are easy to do, even for someone who's never held a drill or swung a hammer. Perform these tasks on their own to give your bathroom a new look the easy way, or do them during a larger redesign project to save money on contractors. Either way, your bathroom is sure to look beautiful when you're finished.
